The Serbian film is one of the strongest I all Europe and thank to the Swedish Serbian Montenegrin actress Jelena Mila we have the possibility of seeing several masterpieces. One of them is the movie by .. produced for the Serbian television … that deals with a particular episode under war world I when the Austrian Hungary army occupy Belgrade. Under this occupation the great Serbian but born in Sarajevo poet Petra Kocic really well play by was intern ate in a asylum for mental sickness. The film opening show two equally important side the tragedy with an artillery bombardment of the town Belgrade and mostly the asylum and a young beautiful woman that run into the rather not so elegant house. It is Elena a Danish nurse play by Masa Dakic . the photography of PHD Djordje Arambasic is very good and it often use a light blue tone to give the sensation of a former time that is still alive and the editing of Tihomir Dukic is very classic and play with the canonical rule a movement and a scene. Elena is a sensitive character that we discover under his talking with Petar Kovic that she is hidden away from a tragically pass with a brother that made suicide that feel that the best for her is trying to help other and feel that the Serbian are her own countryman. We see her really outside the asylum and her dramaturgical part is the one of being both an actor and a spectator. She works really well with the director of the asylum and other person with really high moral standards the professor play with a big charisma by Tihomir Stanic . this one eyes doctor gives and impressive task in making a man that holls fats to his principal and try to give to his patient the more and more comfortable life even if he is doing serval action that could be seen as not morally 100% correct for example to hide his sisters son Jorvan play with a lot of energy by the young actor Jovan Jovanovic or even to have a lover Dr Salka elegiacally play by Jelena Djokic . the love stories between the two doctor is really well done and there is always a kind of cloessens towards them. The asylum is crowded with several lunatic (that are definitely more sane that the madness that is present outside) like Bourbon play by Goran Susljik dress like a Serbian peasants but deeply convinced to be a king of franc or Berthold (Nemanja Oliveric ) a mad dandy addict y that loves woman or some character that are simulating madness like the morphine addict (the acting of Aleksandar Sreckoviclis relaly sensible and sensitive ) that is trying desperately to make out and living in this asylum. The main problem start when the Austrian put in charge for cultural affairs a Austrian office that has taken all the rawness but also the proud of the Bosnian people Herman Loach play in a more than excellent way by Aleksandar Djurica . This character is really gallant play by the Bosnian … he is a crouch but also a compressible one because he really wants to point out that Petra Kocic nationalism could escalate in this terrible war that is always present. Herman is a really elgant man a almost handsome gentleman in his medelage often shooter I whilde image that owns the space can ome nd go can seduce with help of his power and his selsure ego. Herman is not a cultivate man but a educate one and he is trying without any problem to show to each the man he is meeting how is power works., Petra Kocic in Igor Djordjevic acting is a complicate character. He is always bad shaved always afraid of a lot of things and mostly of his own demon nationalism is a realty hard point because he is so proud so glad of his land but even so deep in contrast with the reality of war the bombing the riot and the killing. Herman becomes a double one kind of mirror image about Kovic himself. We see before the tragical ned how Kocici is the really gentleman that is not behaving like a Ub kind something that Herman make especially toward the lady and a kind of father figure for Jorval. Jorval has also a double a young boy that has had a grant shock that received his mother. The way how Goran Markovic read the XX century history and his first big tragedy is really excellent everything with the tools that has been the XX century eyes the cinema. We have so much of Federico Fellin’s description of the rural world , Robert Weill’s and Fritz Lang’s “Doctor Calligari’s cabinette” and with the double Stanley Kubrick’s Berry Lyndon A powerfull work that need to be said . the director Goran Markovic and the producer Marija Bereta thank to whom this film has been also take to his natural place the film theatre has answer to our questions
Could you tell uss how did you get the idea of this movie
Goran Markovic I’m not a big fans of bio picture but I wanted to make a film about this really hard and difficult moment in our history the great war of bather world war I-.. For us Serbs this was lasting in a big retreat and a brutal occupation. I really wanted to see what happen with one of our most important poet Petar Kocic. What happen to him and what could have been. Almost all the characters are real and we made a great work in searching how many document as possible upon it I would have love to find more but it was difficult. I soon realize that there was a paradox this madhouse was the only free part of Serbia under the occupation.
Could you tell uss about the location
Marja Berta the asylum is still exiting but it was a in very bad state. So we find in pancevo that is right near to Belgrade a old hospital build in 1874 so perfect for seated our story. It gave us the possibility of using it. We produced it we from the Serbian Tv 100 % and we had the idea that it could been made to a tV film as well
Could you tell about the contrast between Kovic and the Austrian Bosninag colonel Herman play by Aleksandar Djurica
Goran markovic we decided to use an actor that was from Boosnian and we workd with Aleksandar Djurica n preparing this character that without any doubt is the other voice of the history and this was for me important. We worked also to give to our Azxela shooting the sense and the feeling of a old picture. With Aleksandar Djurica also about the envy because Herman his role ins a rather unsuccessful writer . this is something that we have come yourself
Could you tell us about the Danish girl Elena
Goran Markovic she is a real character and there was a lot of foreign people that come in helping us under world war I . The actress Masa Davic is a Serbian actress that lives in new York and the lullaby is a Danish one that she preparer by Skype with a Danish friends
I’m a bit surprise that on a film that is dealing with psychiatry there is not reference to Sigmund Freud?
He become only important in 1920 after world war I and could been more known. We thought about him but we left him by side.
How did you recreate the diverges patology?
We studied a lot mostly documentary fil and we found one that was excellent on pathology from Portugal.
